Description
The Rolex GMT-Master has always held a very special place in the world of collecting, but every now and then a watch appears that goes far beyond the already legendary status of the model itself. This 1974 Rolex GMT-Master 1675/8 is exactly that watch. At first glance, it already carries everything we love about the yellow gold GMT: the warm brown nipple dial, the rich brown insert, and the unmistakable glamour of one of Rolex’s most charismatic sports watches. It has that irresistible mix of elegance, confidence and jet-set charm that makes the gold GMT-Master such a fascinating watch in the metal. But what transforms this example into something truly extraordinary is the large Khanjar crest seen above 6 o’clock on the dial. From the 1970s onwards, Sultan Qaboos of Oman became known for personally commissioning watches that were enhanced with his royal emblem, the Khanjar crest, either on the dial or the caseback. Many of these watches were presented as gifts to trusted advisors, military figures and close relations, making them not only highly collectible, but also deeply historical objects. During the 1970s, many of these special-order watches were delivered to the Sultan through the family jeweller John Asprey of New Bond Street in London. Watches supplied through Asprey have become some of the most celebrated Omani-issued pieces in the world of collecting, with Rolex sports models standing out as the absolute rarest and most elusive examples to find with a Khanjar crest. Omani Khanjar-signed watches have long been among the most desirable and historically important special-order pieces in the world of vintage Rolex collecting. To find such a crest on any sports Rolex is exceptional. To find it on a gold GMT-Master 1675/8 is on another level entirely. In fact, this watch is believed to be one of only two known examples in this configuration, making it without question one of the rarest GMT-Masters in existence, and very possibly the rarest gold GMT-Master ever to surface. That alone would make it important, but in the metal it becomes something even more special. It is one of those watches that immediately stops you in your tracks. The striking combination of the warm matte brown dial with the bold Khanjar crest creates a presence that is impossible to ignore. It combines the elegance and jet-set appeal of the gold GMT with the mystique and historical importance of one of the most celebrated dial signatures in the vintage watch world. The result is not just rare, but breathtakingly attractive. Collectors will know just how elusive Khanjar watches are, especially when found on highly collectible Rolex sports models. This example stands at the very top of that category. Not only because of its rarity, but because watches like this almost never appear, and once they disappear into important collections, they are rarely seen again. It is exactly the kind of watch that lives in books, in stories, and in the dreams of seasoned collectors. Condition-wise, this example is every bit as impressive as its rarity suggests. The watch remains in exceptional overall condition, fitted with a beautiful super fat font chestnut brown bezel that has aged with exactly the warmth and depth we hope to find on a watch of this level. The matte dial is equally impressive, with the crispy Khanjar logo fully intact, giving the watch a remarkable sense of presence and originality. As seen on many of Rolex’s special-order pieces, the full serial number is engraved inside the caseback by Rolex, a detail that further underlines the exceptional nature of this watch. The watch has also recently been fully serviced by Rolex in January 2026 and comes with Rolex service warranty. To complete the package, the watch will be delivered on a Bulang and Sons strap with Rolex plaque buckle, a combination that suits the character of the watch beautifully and adds an extra touch of understated elegance. For the collector of the rarest and most important vintage Rolex watches, this is not simply another exceptional GMT. This is a true top-of-the-top piece: one of only two known, and undoubtedly one of the most unique and significant GMT-Masters we have ever encountered! Read the article here!
