Rolex Explorer II Black 226570 is one of the most distinctive sports watches in the Rolex collection. Its black dial, orange 24-hour hand and fixed steel bezel create an instantly recognisable design. At the same time, the watch retains the functional character associated with the Rolex Professional range.
The history of the Explorer II began in 1971. Rolex developed the model for explorers, speleologists and professionals operating in environments where distinguishing daytime from nighttime could be difficult. Therefore, the additional 24-hour hand and fixed bezel became essential elements of the original concept.
The modern reference 226570 was introduced in 2021. Its Oystersteel case measures 42 mm in diameter. Despite the sporty dimensions, the watch remains well balanced and, moreover, sits very comfortably on the wrist.
The black dial provides excellent legibility. Large hour markers and hands feature Rolex Chromalight for strong visibility in low-light conditions. Meanwhile, the distinctive orange 24-hour hand adds strong contrast and gives the Explorer II its unmistakable personality.
The fixed Oystersteel bezel features a clearly engraved 24-hour scale. Together with the additional hand, it allows the wearer to distinguish day from night. Furthermore, the independently adjustable local hour hand makes it possible to track a second time zone while travelling.
Inside beats the in-house Rolex Calibre 3285. The automatic movement provides approximately 70 hours of power reserve and carries the Superlative Chronometer certification. In addition, it features the Chronergy escapement, a blue Parachrom hairspring and Paraflex shock absorbers.
Rolex Explorer II 226570 is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a more tool-oriented Rolex sports watch. It is highly legible and practical, while at the same time offering a character clearly different from the Submariner or GMT-Master II.
This example dates from 2021. It comes complete with all original Rolex boxes and documents.
