The Rolex GMT-Master II

The Rolex GMT-Master II must be one of the coolest and most famous watches from the Swiss manufacturer. Models like the ‘Batman’, ‘Root-Beer’ or ‘Pepsi’ are extremely popular. And in 2022, Rolex even announced and produced the first ever ‘Lefty’ GMT-Master II: the ‘Sprite’. If you’re a lover of soft drinks, please buy yourself a cool Rolex GMT-Master II.

Nicknames on the GMT-Master II

The market has its own way of defining watches, especially through the creative nicknames for different GMT-Master II bezel colors. Rolex offers a variety of options here. Names like 'Coke' for the black and red bezel and 'Pepsi' for the blue and red aren't just catchy, they help keep track of the constant Rolex innovations. The Sprite is known as the 'lefty' as well, with the green and black bezel. The latest addition to the family is the Bruce Wayne, which is the black and grey bezel on the GMT-Master II. The Batman or Batgirl, depending on the bracelet, features a black and blue bezel. These names were made up because it’s pretty hard to remember all the different reference numbers on these watches, making it a bit easier to recognize through nicknames.

Color schemes on the famous GMT-Master II

From a decent ‘Rolesor’ two-tone GMT-Master II to timepieces in solid white gold or rose gold (Everose), there is plenty of choice when you’re in the market for a new, pre-owned or vintage GMT-Master II on Wristler. Rolex produced different bezel colors, dating the ‘Pepsi’ from back in the 1950s already. These color schemes not only reflect style but also partner with history and legacy, marking the GMT-Master II as an icon.

There are some other nicknames available for the GMT-Master II, starting with the red and blue bezel called the Pepsi. The red and black bezel was called the Coke while the black and blue bezel was called Batman. Ever since the launch of the GMT-Master, there is the ‘Root Beer’: with rose gold and stainless steel and black and brown colored bezel it’s a beauty.

Different models for the GMT-Master II

Since the launch of the Rolex GMT-Master II, it’s one of the most popular watches alongside the Rolex Submariner or the Daytona. For the entry-level Rolex GMT-Masters, there are two options: you can look for a stainless-steel case with a black ceramic bezel like the reference 116710LN, and it will cost you around €11.000. If you like your GMT-Master II to be a bit more vintage, you can opt for the aluminum bezel like the reference 16710. Rolex produced this model between the 1980s and 2007 in different colorways like the ‘Coke’, ‘Pepsi’ or the regular black bezel. These pieces will set you back anywhere from €9.000 up to €18.000, depending on the state of the watch.

The original GMT-Master II came with a slightly bigger case, calling it the ‘Fat Lady’. These watches were only made by Rolex between 1983 and 1988 with the 3085 caliber which was also used in the earlier Explorer II models. From 2014 to 2018, there is an absolute stunner made by Rolex: the reference 116719BLRO. This has a red and blue bezel which is made from scratch-resistant ceramic. The most important part of this particular watch was the case and bracelet: it was made of white gold and that’s one of the reasons why it’s expensive: you have to pay around €35.000 for a well-maintained version on Wristler. You can also opt for the meteorite dial, which is one of the hardest models to find.

The Rolex Batman GMT-Master II gets its nickname from the blue and black bezels. You can either opt for the 116710BLNR or the 126710BLNR. Since the 116710BLNR was discontinued, prices started rising in 2019, and you have to pay at least €14.000 for a well-maintained GMT-Master II on Wristler. There is a newer Batman though, which is only available on the Jubilee bracelet and has a 70-hour power reserve thanks to the new 3285 caliber.

The Appeal of Pre-Owned and Vintage Models

Venturing into the world of pre-owned and vintage GMT-Master II models can be a rewarding experience. Owning a piece like the GMT-Master 1675, with historical significance, offers not just timeless style but also an insight into the artistry of earlier Rolex craftsmanship. Prices for such models start as low as €9.500 and can climb to €18.500, depending on their state and accompanying documentation.

Full gold or two-tone on the GMT-Master II

If you want to steal the show, you might consider the full gold versions or the two-tone Rolesor versions of the GMT-Master II made by Rolex. When considering the Rolex GMT Master II gold price, you'll find it varies based on these unique configurations, with recent models setting a notable standard. The Rootbeer features an Oyster bracelet in rose gold and steel or full rose gold. The other one is the black and grey bezel, two-tone or full gold GMT, with the jubilee bracelet in two-tone or yellow gold. The bracelet comes in your choice of stainless-steel with yellow gold, white gold or Everose rose gold.

Models from the early 2000s are popular with a black ceramic bezel and a green dial while the case and bracelet are made of yellow gold only. Since 2018, you can pick another GMT-Master II which was made of rose gold in full. This 126715CHNR feature a black and brown bezel with the 3285 caliber. The full 18-karat gold pieces, such as the Rootbeer or the Jubilee yellow gold GMT-Master II will set you back at least €35.000, which is a lot cheaper compared to your local authorized dealer.

Price Dynamics and Market Trends

The price of a Rolex GMT-Master II is not about what's on the tag at an authorized dealer, but how it performs on the grey market. Understanding the gmt master 2 rolex price involves knowing both current demand and market placement, making these models a dynamic purchasing choice. For instance, while a (now discontinued) reference 126710BLRO (Pepsi) was listed at €11.000 retail, its market prices swung between €16.000 and €30.000, depending on factors like condition, demand and the fact that it’s now discontinued. Such variability makes these watches not just a purchase, but an investment if you play your cards right.

One thing that’s for sure is that the Rolex GMT-Master II is so popular, that the watches aren’t affordable anymore. Starting at roughly €12.000 for a reference 116710LN with a black ceramic bezel and stainless-steel case and bracelet, this is the cheapest GMT-Master II available on Wristler. You can easily spend way over €16.000 for the Batman, Pepsi or Coke.

If you would like to try out the new ‘lefty’ Rolex GMT-Master II reference 126720VTNR, you have to bring at least €17.000 to the table. Or you have to wait around 5 years or more to get your hands on one at your local authorized dealer. These ‘Sprite’ watches from Rolex are the first ever left-handed-crown watches produced by Rolex, featuring a black and green bezel with a black dial. Available on both the Oyster or Jubilee bracelet, you can opt for the best look on your wrist.
